Our overview page for developing an online shop in Hamburg offers a complete overview of our shop development services – including the development process, system comparison and transparent pricing.
Shopify isn't the right choice for every project. As an e-commerce agency for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, we also develop Shopware shops as a German, self-hosted alternative, WooCommerce shops based on WordPress, and Magento 2 shops for enterprise and complex B2B businesses – and we'll tell you in advance where the limits lie.
The most used platform in Germany in terms of the number of shops – these are the reasons
No operating expenses
Hosting, security updates, scaling on peak days: Shopify takes care of it all. No more late-night phone calls because the server is giving up under the load.
Quickly on the market
A fully operational online store can be set up in three to six weeks. Those who want to test a brand don't need to waste half a year on technical aspects.
Checkout that works
A purchase process optimized across millions of orders, including Shop Pay. This is precisely the point where self-built shops lose revenue.
Multi-channel from a single inventory
Amazon, eBay, Instagram, TikTok and brick-and-mortar stores access the same products and inventory – without duplicate maintenance.
Markets, languages, currencies
Shopify Markets allows each target market to have its own prices, tax rates, and language – without a second installation.
Factory speed
A global CDN and a core optimized for speed. A Shopify store only becomes slow due to too many apps – and that's exactly what we're addressing.
Clean interfaces
The admin and storefront APIs are documented and stable. JTL-Wawi, Xentral, DATEV, and SAP can be reliably integrated.
Mobile first
The themes are designed for mobile devices, not just added on as an afterthought. That's where most purchasing decisions are made these days.
Is Shopify a good fit for your project?
The four systems we are developing – side by side, without embellishment
In terms of the number of shops, Shopify leads the German market: approximately 31,7% share, ahead of Shopware with 25,7% and JTL with 14% (uptain e-Report 2026, data based on over 3.000 German online shops). However, the picture is different among the 1.000 highest-grossing B2C shops – there, Shopware is in the lead according to the EHI survey. Both of these points are true, and together they provide the real answer: Shopify wins in terms of breadth, not at the top. For most medium-sized retailers, this breadth is precisely the right approach.

Four starting situations we often encounter
No embellished success figures – but what we recommend in these cases
The shop takes up too much time.
Switch to Shopify
Background:
A thriving online store with 30 plugins, constant updates, and frequent outages. The owner spends more time on technical issues than on product selection.
Away:
Migration to Shopify, systematically reducing features, keeping only what generates revenue.
What you will gain from this:
Shopify handles the operations, so you can spend your time selling again. The price: less freedom in the details.
New brand, quick start
D2C Rebuild
Background:
One product, one idea, one limited budget – and the question of whether the market will even take it.
Away:
Shopify with a customized theme, a few strong product pages, clean measurement from day one.
What you will gain from this:
On the market in weeks instead of months – and reliable figures before larger investments are made.
Wholesale with corporate clients
B2B – things are getting tight here
Background:
Customer hierarchies, budgets, approval levels, established discount scales, integration with merchandise management.
Away:
Shopify Plus covers business accounts and price lists. For approval processes and in-depth rule sets, we recommend... Shopware or Magento 2.
What you will gain from this:
A decision based on requirements – instead of a system that you will abandon in two years.
Sales through many channels
Multi-channel
Background:
Our own shop, Amazon, eBay, and social commerce platforms are managed separately. Inventories are becoming increasingly disparate, and overselling is becoming more frequent.
Away:
Shopify as the leading system, channels connected, inventory management as the sole source for stock levels.
What you will gain from this:
One product maintenance instead of four – and inventory you can rely on.

Our Shopify project is in progress.
To be honest, Shopify is the newest of the four platforms for us. Instead of passing off other people's projects as our own, we're showcasing the project we're currently working on – building the same shop once in WooCommerce and once in Shopify, in order to measure the comparison rather than simply claiming it.
hairdoshop.de: multilingual online shop for hair extensions, managed by us on WooCommerce for years – and now also as a Shopify shop at its own address.
Under construction · WooCommerce and Shopify · Multilingual
hairdoshop.de — the same shop, built twice
hairdoshop.de sells real and synthetic hair extensions to end customers and hair salons – a range with many color variations. The shop has been running on WooCommerce for years, built and maintained by us, and will remain there . In parallel, we are building the same product range on Shopify, under its own web address.
The reason isn't a move, but a comparison that no one else can provide. Platform recommendations are almost always based on projects that differ in product range, budget, and requirements – so what was due to the platform, and what to the project? Here, everything is the same: the same ten products, the same 72 color variations, the same two languages, the same mandatory German information, the same team. Any differences are due to the platform. And because both shops should be publicly discoverable, the Shopify shop will have its own product and category descriptions – two domains with identical texts would be competing against each other.
Variant model of WooCommerce attributes mapped to Shopify options
All 73 addresses were compared to the Shopify templates – including cases without a match.
Two WPML data sets are combined to create a Shopify product with translation.
Original texts instead of copies, legal texts and payment methods for the German market
Status: The project is underway. As soon as both shops can be measured side-by-side, we will replace this paragraph with a comparison – setup time, loading time, running costs, maintenance effort. Not before.

If your inventory management system is from Microsoft, Shopify's situation is unique: Microsoft provides its own connector for Dynamics 365 Business Central —free of charge and pre-installed in new environments. However, it has limitations that should be considered before planning, such as those related to returns, customer-specific pricing, and on-premises installations. Our article " Connecting Business Central to Your Online Shop " explains what the connector can do and when a custom connection is necessary. Shopify Plus – business accounts, checkout extensions, automations, and headless storefronts: €30.000–€48.000 for implementation, plus the Shopify Plus license. Your final cost will depend on: B2B requirements, checkout extensions, and headless storefronts (plus license).
Cancellation button in Shopify – mandatory since June 19, 2026
Since June 19, 2026, online cancellation must be possible. This is the most difficult case for Shopify because the checkout process is not freely customizable outside of Shopify Plus. In practice, however, it remains solvable: the cancellation option doesn't belong in the order confirmation anyway, but rather on a separate cancellation page, linked from the customer account and order confirmation – this works with every plan.
Shopify charges €36 per month for Basic in Germany (as of August 2026) , or €27 per month with annual billing; €105 or €79 for Grow ; and €384 or €289 for Advanced . Shopify Plus starts at around €2.100 per month. This fee covers hosting, core shop maintenance, and security updates—items you would otherwise have to pay separately with a self-hosted solution.
Does Shopify charge additional transaction fees?
Yes, but only if you're not using Shopify Payments. With an external payment provider, Shopify charges an additional 2% in the Basic plan, 1% in Grow, 0,6% in Advanced, and 0,2% in Plus – on top of your payment provider's fees. Shopify Payments eliminates this surcharge. We'll calculate this for you using your actual sales figures before the project starts, because the difference can quickly amount to thousands of dollars for high-volume transactions.
How long does it take to develop a Shopify store?
A shop with a customized standard theme will be up and running in three to six weeks. A custom theme with individual product displays takes six to ten weeks. We estimate a migration from an existing shop with many products and order history to take six to twelve weeks. For businesses in Pinneberg, Elmshorn, and Uetersen, we work with fixed weekly appointments – either in person or via video call.
What's the best way to start?
We'll start with a consultation to discuss your product range, target audience, processes, and existing system. This will allow us to assess whether Shopify is a good fit – and if not, we'll let you know. Following this, we'll develop a concept, a fixed-price quote, and a timeline. Call us at +49 4122 4084792 or use the contact form.
When is Shopify the wrong Choice?
If you need deep customization of the ordering and checkout process, have to map highly complex B2B logic with customer hierarchies and approval levels, require a customized pricing or configuration system, or if your data is to be processed exclusively within the EU, then Shopware or Magento 2 are the better choices. We don't sell you a system that you'll have to abandon in two years.
What are the disadvantages of Shopify?
Four points you should know before making a decision. First, the fees: If you don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional 0,2% to 2% on each order, depending on the plan – on top of your payment provider's fees. Second, the checkout: It can only be customized within the platform; more extensive customization is reserved for Shopify Plus. Third, the apps: Features that other systems offer are often only available through apps with their own monthly fees in Shopify – this adds up. Fourth, data sovereignty: Your shop and data are stored with a North American provider, not on your server. On the other hand, you save on hosting, security updates, and the operation of the core shop system. You can find a comparison of all four systems in our system comparison.
Is Shopify worth it for my shop?
Shopify is worthwhile if you want to start selling quickly and don't want to run your own tech team: manageable product range, standardized processes, and growth through marketing rather than custom logic. It's not worthwhile if your business relies on individual pricing and approval processes, requires deep intervention in the order process, or if your data must be stored exclusively within the EU. We compare the platform and app costs against your actual sales figures before the project starts – and will decline if Shopware or Magento 2 is the better choice.
Shopify or WooCommerce – which is a better fit?
Shopify handles hosting, security, and updates for you and is ready to go faster; however, you pay a monthly fee and accept the platform's limitations. WooCommerce gives you full control over code, hosting, and data, but requires ongoing technical maintenance. A good rule of thumb: Shopify's standard product range and quick start-up are advantages, while WooCommerce offers customized processes and data sovereignty. See the detailed comparison of shop systems for more information.
Shopify or Shopware – what's the difference?
Shopware is a German open-source platform that you can host yourself and customize to any extent – particularly well-suited for B2B, rule sets, and individual processes. Shopify is a hosted service with stricter limitations, but without any operating costs. In numbers: Shopify leads the German market in terms of the number of shops, while Shopware leads among the 1.000 highest-grossing B2C shops. See the article "Shopware 6 or Shopify" for details.
Shopify or Magento 2 – when is the effort worthwhile?
Magento 2 is worthwhile if you need thousands of products, multiple shops from a single installation, complex pricing logic, or deep ERP integration. The trade-off is higher development and operating costs. Shopify is the leaner choice, as long as your requirements stay within the standard framework. Our Magento agency page shows where the line is drawn.
Can Shopify do B2B?
Partly. Shopify Plus offers true B2B features: company profiles, contacts with their own permissions, customer-specific price lists, payment terms, and net prices. In the smaller plans, B2B functionality can only be replicated via customer groups and apps, which quickly reaches its limits. Those who need customer hierarchies, budgets, and approval processes are better served by Shopware or Magento .
How does a migration from WooCommerce to Shopify work?
In five steps: Inventory (products, variants, customers, orders, URLs), setting up the Shopify store with theme and payment methods, data migration to a test store, redirect list for each old URL, then go-live with testing. The critical part is not the data import, but the assignment of variants and the redirects. Flat rate: €3.500–€5.950. Package prices are net, excluding VAT.
Will my Google rankings be retained during a migration?
If the redirects are correct, yes – with a brief dip of a few weeks. Shopify enforces its own URL patterns (/products/, /collections/, /pages/Your old addresses almost always change. Before the migration, we create a complete list of all indexed URLs and set up a 301 redirect for each one. Our [link to relevant documentation] covers what you need to consider. SEO work with off.
Will customer accounts and order history be transferred?
Customer data and order history can be transferred, but passwords generally cannot – they are encrypted and non-transferable. Your customers will set a new password upon their first login. This must be announced in advance; otherwise, support requests will flood in on the very day of the migration. We will check credit balances, vouchers, and subscriptions individually, as they are handled differently depending on the old system.
Can I keep my domain?
Yes. The domain remains yours; it's simply being pointed to Shopify. You can leave it with your current provider and just change the DNS records, or you can transfer it to Shopify. We recommend keeping the domain with your current registrar—this keeps the option open to any other system.
Are you also migrating from Shopware, Magento or JTL to Shopify?
Yes. The process is the same, but the pitfalls differ: With Magento, it's usually the attribute sets and configurable products; with Shopware, it's the property structure; and with JTL, it's the integration of the ERP system. We also migrate in the opposite direction if it turns out that Shopify is no longer sufficient.
What is Liquid and do I need my own theme?
Liquid is Shopify's template language – it's used to design what your customers see. For starters, a customized standard theme like Dawn is often sufficient. A custom theme is worthwhile if your brand needs a unique look or if the product presentation is particularly special – for example, for variations with color swatches, configurators, or product ranges that require explanation. We implement a custom product configurator with photo previews in Shopify as a theme extension using an app block.
How many apps does a Shopify store need – and how much do they cost?
As few as possible. Each app costs a month, often €10 to €50, and many slow down the shop. Ten apps quickly add up to €300 per month – that's €3.600 per year for features that sometimes only need to be built into the theme. For every requirement, we first check whether it can be implemented within the theme or via a custom extension.
Can the Shopify checkout be customized?
Only within the framework set by Shopify. The checkout belongs to the platform; the previous method via checkout.liquid is disabled. Adjustments are currently made via checkout extensions; more in-depth modifications are reserved for Shopify Plus. This is a real difference compared to... WooCommerce, where we can freely redesign the checkout – anyone who wants to make many changes to it should know this before choosing a system.
How fast is a Shopify store?
Shopify is inherently good: it operates a global CDN, and its core is designed for speed. What almost always slows down a shop is added on top – too many apps, uncompressed images, and scripts that load on demand. We measure Core Web Vitals before and after launch and keep the number of scripts to a minimum. A free initial assessment is available from our SEO audit tool.
What does headless operation with hydrogen mean and when is it worthwhile?
Headless means that Shopify only provides data via the Storefront API; we build the user interface ourselves – for example, with Hydrogen. This is worthwhile for highly customized shopping experiences, content from multiple sources, or when the shop is part of a larger application. For a typical online shop, it's an expensive undertaking with little return – we'll tell you honestly which category your project falls into.
Do you also develop your own Shopify apps?
Yes. If a requirement is ongoing and no good standard app exists, developing a custom extension via the Admin and Storefront API is often more cost-effective than years of subscription fees. We've been building such extensions for other systems for years – our own extensions are available in our shop.
Which ERP and inventory management systems can be integrated?
Can I sell on Amazon, eBay, and Instagram using Shopify?
Yes, selling through distribution channels from a shared inventory – that's one of the platform's strengths. A clean product database is crucial; otherwise, errors will be replicated across all channels. You can find out how we set this up on our marketplace sales page.
Is Shopify GDPR-compliant for German shops?
Shopify provides a data processing agreement and standard contractual clauses, and a shop can be operated in compliance with data protection regulations. However, Shopify is a North American provider, and data can leave the EU. Anyone requiring that all data be stored exclusively in Germany needs a self-hosted solution. We configure cookie banners, consent, and tracking so that nothing loads without consent.
Which payment methods work in Germany?
Shopify Payments covers card payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shop Pay; PayPal, Klarna (including invoice payment), instant bank transfer, and prepayment are added via providers or apps. In Germany, invoice payment isn't an extra, but rather an expectation – it should be included in every payment plan. We explain which combination is most advantageous on our payment methods page.
Is a Shopify store automatically legally compliant?
No. Shopify provides the technology, not the German legal framework. You still need to set up the legal notice, privacy policy, cancellation policy and sample cancellation form, the basic price information according to the Price Indication Ordinance (PAngV), the complete information on shipping costs and delivery time, and the correct labeling of the order button according to Section 312j of the German Civil Code (BGB). This is manual work – and the point at which self-built shops are most frequently issued cease-and-desist letters.
How do invoices, sales tax and accounting work?
Shopify doesn't generate German invoices by default – this is handled by an app or your ERP system. VAT, intra-community deliveries, and the OSS procedure must be configured correctly; otherwise, the shop will calculate incorrectly in other EU countries. We'll set up tax rates, reverse charge for business customers, and data transfer to DATEV or Lexware.
Can I display multiple languages and countries?
Yes, via Shopify Markets: separate prices, currencies, tax rates, and languages for each market. The translation itself is editorial work – machine-generated raw text is rarely sufficient for product descriptions. We set up the structure and provide support with the content.
Do I own the theme and data – and can I get out again?
The theme we build belongs to you; you receive the complete source code. Products, customers, and orders can be exported at any time. What doesn't transfer is the platform itself: switching away from Shopify requires another migration with redirects. That's precisely why we thoroughly check beforehand whether the system is a good fit for you.
Will you continue to support the shop after the launch?
Yes. We handle ongoing maintenance, development, monitoring, and coordination with your service providers – with a dedicated contact person instead of a ticket number. Scope and response times are available on our Maintenance and Support page.
Do you also work with clients outside of Hamburg?
Yes, nationwide – and we're happy to meet with you in person in Hamburg, Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg, Itzehoe, Neumünster, Norderstedt, or Stade. Our office is located in Tornesch in the Pinneberg district, about 25 minutes from Hamburg. A look at our references will show you what we've recently worked on.
