Connecting Abacus to the online shop
Abacus has discontinued its online shop. The platform on which the AbaShops ran was shut down on December 31, 2025 – there is no successor product.
What remains is the Abacus REST API . We use it to connect Shopware 6, WooCommerce, Magento 2 and Shopify: articles, stock levels, prices, orders and customers in both directions.

What happened to the AbaShop?
Abacus shut down the city platform on which the shops ran at the end of 2025. The reason given came from the manufacturer itself: shop solutions had evolved into comprehensive platforms with social media and marketing functions, and this was no longer part of its core competencies.
This is an honest statement, and it has a clear consequence. Anyone still using an AbaShop today needs a standalone shop system and an interface to it. Abacus provides the interface; you bring your own shop.
The deadline has now passed. If you are reading this and haven't migrated yet, there's no need to panic – but it's also not a situation you should put up with for another year.
Which shop system is a good fit after AbaShop?
In Switzerland, most migration paths lead to Shopware 6 or WooCommerce. We have been implementing both for years, and both can be seamlessly integrated with the Abacus REST API.
Shopware 6
The most common approach in Swiss SMEs. Strong B2B functions, German-speaking ecosystem, and integration via admin and store APIs.
WooCommerce
If WordPress is already installed and the catalog remains manageable, this is a cost-effective entry point, integrating via the WordPress REST API.
Shopify
Going live quickly, little inherent logic. The limitations become apparent with complex pricing rules and B2B approvals – then it becomes more complicated than expected.
Which approach is most suitable depends on your product range and processes, not on the interface. The work involved is the same for all three.
And what if you want to stick with Magento?
Then a closer look is worthwhile, because there's a gap here that's rarely mentioned. A Magento connector exists for Abacus from a Swiss provider – but it's only approved for Abacus 2023 and 2024, not for 2025 or 2026.
| Magento connector | Shopware connector | |
|---|---|---|
| Released for Abacus | 2023, 2024 | 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 |
| API scopes | 12 | 21 |
| Read sales orders | ja | |
| Storage location definitions | ja | |
| Exchange rate, units | ja |
Users running a current Abacus version who want to keep Magento don't have a standard, approved solution. In these cases, we build the connection ourselves via the REST API – including the data flows that the pre-built connector doesn't cover.
What else should be included in the specifications for Swiss projects?
- QR invoice. The code with the structured reference is generated in the ERP system, not in the shop. However, the reference must match the order; otherwise, the payment reconciliation will fail.
- Value added tax in mail order. Once annual sales of small shipments reach 100.000 Swiss francs, the online retailer becomes liable for tax in Switzerland; from that point on, all deliveries are considered domestic deliveries. This changes the tax logic in the online shop, not just in the ERP system.
- Customs and customs clearance data. This usually goes through the freight forwarder, but requires accurate product data – customs tariff number, country of origin, weight. This information comes from the ERP system.
We will clarify these three points before the offer, not in the second project phase.
Frequently asked questions about abacuses and online shops
What interface does Abacus offer?
The REST API is the official and current method, available from Abacus 2023 onwards. AbaConnect via SOAP is the legacy method and will continue to work in existing installations. For new connections, we rely on the REST API – this is how articles, inventory, prices, orders, and customer data are transferred in both directions.
Are you an Abacus partner?
No. We are not a partner of Abacus and do not earn anything from licenses. We only bill for the connection and its operation. If an Abacus reseller in your area is a better option, we will let you know – the Abacus ecosystem is well-established in Switzerland.
They are based in Germany. Is that acceptable for a Swiss company?
Yes, the project work is already predominantly done remotely. More important than the location are the Swiss specifics in the process chain – QR invoices, distance selling regulations, customs data. These belong in the requirements specification before the first line of code is written.
How long does a connection take?
For standard processing – items, inventory, orders, shipping status – we expect a few weeks. Special cases, such as multiple warehouses, B2B pricing and approvals, partial deliveries, and returns, increase the lead time. We estimate based on an analysis of your processes, not a price list.
When we advise against it
If your AbaShop is still running and your catalog is small, a Swiss provider with a ready-made package might be the faster option – the Abacus ecosystem is well-represented there. Our strength lies in our built-in connection: multiple warehouses, B2B logic, and special cases that no standard connector can accommodate. If you don't need one, we'll let you know before we provide a quote.
Let's talk about your Abacus connection.
Briefly describe which Abacus version you are using and where the shop is located. You will receive an assessment, not a presentation.
